| The Case for Diversity in Developing an Inclusive Curriculum Dr Natasha Katuta Mwila Abstract: The movement to make business courses more inclusive through case diversity is gaining visibility and momentum. The emerging body of work in this area is inspired by an acknowledgement of the limitations in the demographic representation in case study material that is used as a basis for teaching business. There is a notable absence of diversity in the types of cases that are featured and also in the profile of case protagonists. Case studies are typically designed to have a decision-making focus. This requires learners to situate themselves in the case context and in the mind of the case protagonist. If a learner cannot identify with either the case context or the case protagonist, how can they be included in the case discussion? How can the learner develop their decision-making skills if they are excluded from opportunities to contribute? How can learners achieve rich, deep, critical and reflective learning as opposed to surface level rote outcomes? This presentation provides insights on how case diversity enables inclusivity of all students, equalises opportunity for student learning and enriches learning outcomes. | Showcasing Decolonising in Practice Amelia Gascoigne-Roberts Abstract: Drawing on my own teaching experiences, observations and participatory interactions with students and colleagues, this action-based research takes an autoethnographic perspective and an intersectionality method approach. The aim is to gain a better understanding on how to Decolonise teaching within Higher Education by critically reflecting my own teaching methods. I will be sharing my research to help others understand how they as an individual, team or as an institute can help create a learning environment that breeds equality. |
